Sunshine in the end: Photo assignment -- Abby Newcombe

Abby Newcombe, AVC 2027, travelled to Port Hope Simpson as one of the student participants on the Chinook Project. As part of the experience, the students craft various pieces of writing.
This photo was taken as we were headed out of Port Hope Simpson, Labrador, after stopping for some last-minute souvenirs. Although our time here was hectic and full of rain, we were able to end the week with the sun shining and some pretty amazing memories to take home with us. When I look at this photo, I feel grateful. Being a part of the Chinook Project provided me with the opportunity to work alongside these amazing individuals and meet so many others from the Port Hope Simpson community who helped us in more ways than we could’ve imagined.
On the days when we ran late, we were not met with negative attitudes but instead a loving community who didn’t hesitate to jump in and help, arrange our meals, or just provide a few kind words. Dr. Jackson, Dr. Foley, and Kate were immensely supportive, providing us with their knowledge and words of encouragement but, most importantly, giving us room to spread our wings. Even though my classmates and I each have our own unique personalities- if one of us was struggling, instead of focusing on our own problems, we rallied together and built each other up.
With every hiccup or roadblock, we continued to run as a well-oiled machine and pulled off a successful trip, helping numerous animals and strengthening the skills of some pretty incredible future veterinarians in the process. Each time I look at this photo, I’m reminded of everything I gained from this experience and how grateful I am for the people I shared it with.
