Rainbow – Ajagutak

Grace Done, AVC 2025, travelled to Nain and Postville as one of the student participants on the Chinook Project.  As part of the experience, the students craft various pieces of writing.

This photo was taken June 20^th, 2024, at 9:34pm, the night before we left Postville, NL and concluded our 2024 Chinook Project. 

A photo can hardly capture this moment. This was the most vibrant and monumental double-rainbow I have ever seen. It was paired with an equally vibrant and fiery sunset that bathed the water and mountains in a golden glow. The entire atmosphere of the cool pebble beach transitioned to one of serenity and warmth in a matter of minutes. For those precious moments before the rainbow inevitably began to fade; before the sun began to descend beyond the horizon, I looked around me and felt a sense of peace as I embraced the circumstances that brought us there that night.

You see, we weren’t meant to be on that beach that evening. We were actually scheduled to fly to Goose Bay earlier that day, but our flight was delayed due to strong winds. We had just concluded a busy two weeks of working hard, learning new skills, and pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones on a daily basis. The team was justifiably feeling fatigued, and the uncertainty of our departure plans was an added stressor to be sure. 

However, in the midst of this little interlude, a group of us students decided to explore the Postville boardwalk and beach one last time which led to us stumbling across this serendipitous scene. Unbeknownst to us, the veterinarians of the team had also chosen to visit the boardwalk further down and were witnessing the same scene as us. As we all convened on the path and walked back to our houses sharing pictures and experiences, I think we were all in agreement that this was worth waiting for.

It was as if Labrador was sending a gentle reminder that everything happens for a reason, and you cannot have a rainbow without a little rain.
